Torres' First strike

Great Strike by Torres.

A brilliant through ball by Anelka, found Torres who was playing off the shoulders of the West Ham defenders.
A rainy day at the Bridge, the rain brings back some very bad memories for the Chelsea faithful. When Anelka split the West Ham defense with his through ball, the ball seemed to lose it's bounce in the puddle but Torres did well to swivel and bury a goal with his left foot. The rain hadn't played spoilsport again after all.
The reaction of the crowd, Ancelloti and players were really unbelievable on TV, wonder how it must have felt at the Bridge?

With Drogba being very effective in the first half, and Kalou and Anelka doing their bit, it is going to be a tough summer period for the Chelsea hierarchy to chose players for a summer clear out.

This 'emotional' goal should not mask the ' average' defending that Chelsea were forced into by some creative West Ham attacks.

However let this day & match be remembered for the man who had a 50 mil pounds monkey come off his back.

A season in retrospect

Just as we come to the twilight of an eventful season , it raises more questions than provide any answers. For instance, we were all for talented youth in our squad at the start of the season, for which some heavyweight players were shown the door in last summer's clear out. But here we are again, with almost all of our young potential first teamers, in Bruma, van holt, Studge, Kakuta etc, all loaned out. After the champions league exit I was expecting McEachran to get some solid playing time under his belt. But he wasn't even in the team. So, firstly do we have a policy that encourages or discourages youth?

Torres definitely needs a creative midfielder who can pass effective through balls to him.
Just remembering Torres' goals for Liverpool, I can recollect that most of the times Torres scored the goals, I would compare his 'slicing of the defenders', 'like a hot knife through butter'. The accelerating pace of his, playing off the defenders shoulders just like a choreographed musical. In fact on many occasions just before he would score those goals, you could see Torres pointing with his hand to the place where he wanted the through pass to be made, and of course Gerard & company would willingly oblige.

Chelsea tactically play poles apart from what Torres is used to, Chelsea use Drogba to hold on to long Balls. With Lampard arriving late in the box to regularly score 20 a season.
Torres is no ball holding striker in the same manner as Drogba is not known for his pace. And hence some changes need to be rung in at least for a good next season.

Despite all this, what are the solutions to Chelsea's woes of problems in the summer.

1) Summer clear out of non core members of the side. Along with this promotion of youngsters in the Team. Studge, Kakuta, McEachran, Bruma van Holt etc, all of them need to be rotated into the team. And in these youngsters we can surely find the answers to Chelsea's creativity problems. Learn from Kenny Dalglish - promoting youngsters in a high intensity game with Arsenal recently. BTW, these youngsters were not even looked at during Benitez's managerial stint.

2) Either get a right winger or an attacking right back. Ivanovic is very good as a central defender and should contribute at right back only in case of extreme needs.

3) To accommodate Lampard's game and for his 15/20 goals a season, we need the creativity to stem from the deep lying playmaker role à la a Pirlosque type player. McEachran can do that.

These are the most important points that need to be addressed along with whether to keep Ancelloti as the manager next season. I feel that Carlos has not done anything wrong, and his calm demeanor was in fact keeping the rocking Chelsea boat steady mid season, lets see what Abramovich has to say.
